Position Paper Proposal
The purpose of this paper is to persuade my administration to provide funding for the use of e-reader technology in the classroom. I will be evaluating current research on the effectiveness of e-readers in education, their neurological effect on learners, and the applications they could potentially be used for. On a very practical level, I will also be doing some research on the financial feasibility of this proposal (This is an actual project that my principal wants me to research and present my findings on to her) and evaluate what non-monetary benefits will be given to students through the knowledge I have learned in this course. The completed project will be given to my principal and presented to the county school board at the opening meeting in August, so this is an important project that I hope I can utilize all that I've learned in this class and impact my entire school system with the findings.

This is such a great idea! I was reading through your SRE and was impressed with your idea. I went to an apple technology training and that was amazing. I love my Kindle and had thought to propose a similar idea to my principal. After attending this technology in service, I was sold on the IPAD. Are you considering this as an optional e-reader? I definitely think integrating any type of electronic reader in the classroom would be highly motivating for all students. What type of technology is available at your school? Are you planning to propose this to your principal? If so, what are your thoughts on his/her reaction?
ReplyDeleteTalk about writing for an authentic purpose!
ReplyDeleteYour paper, in addition to making such a valuable contribution to students in your school and county, will be valuable to others, too, Andrew.
Do consider seeking publication in Meridian: an online journal about technology use in K-12 education -- http://www.ncsu.edu/meridian/ You could pitch that this is the pre- and that you'll write an update after 6 months and a year with your eReaders.
I was worried that you'd not find much about how eReaders may affect the brain but I'm more hopeful since I searched on the NC State Libraries page and came up with this fascinating research study:
Reading in 2110 – reading behavior and reading devices:a case study
Author: Diana Marti; Kathrin Grzeschik; Paul Donner; Yevgeniya Kruppa
The Electronic Library Vol: 29 Issue: 3 ISSN: 0264-0473 Date: 2011 Pages: 288 - 302
... by the individual reading behavior of a person, as well as by the nature of a text (scholarly or novelistic), than by the reading devices used. Research limitations...
Interesting point about the nature of the text having an influence.
Good luck with this. I know we'll on being on the lookout for articles for you.
